In 2007 a team of urban missionaries led by Pastor Ed Smalls and Pastor Rick Eubanks came to Third Ward to begin a mission of Nutrition, Education and Welfare aimed at the children and youth of the community. On February 24 we met at Emancipation Park with a team composed of volunteers from City Church Amarillo, Grand Parkway Baptist Church, Sugar Land/Richmond and St Phillips Baptist Church of Third Ward Houston. The meeting was a success ministering to over 200 children and residents. Another meeting was set for Spring Break March 2007. Led by Pastor Don Lane Jr. of City Church Amarillo and a team of teenage mission bible students and teachers, we met at Cuney Homes and ministered to over 240 young people and set the stage for a mission within Third Ward that continues today.
In April 2007 an agreement was entered into with the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Board of Directors to allow CityChurch Houston to manage and start the rebuilding process for the oldest King Center in Texas and one of the oldest in these United States. Under the guidance of Pastor Ed Smalls during the next 5 years, major renovations of the community center and the erection of new homes for use in the community was accomplished.
Partnering with outside mission groups within a year CityChurch Houston was providing meals to over 5000 adults and children with the greater Houston area annually.
Its skill training programs gained international recognition through University of Houston and PEACEJAM with a visit by Nobel Peace Winner Shirin Ebida of Iran. Her visit was to observe our urban garden program featuring Aquaponics and skill training for women funded through the Gulf Coast Community Services which prepared the women for financial independence in the field of silk screening.
Today CityChurch points its resources toward the preparing of young ministers to succeed in this community urban work and skill training for youth and adults.
